Two marine biologists in Basket Range - Gareth and Rainbo Belton's Adelaide Hills estate, where a PhD in seaweed became eight hectares of natural wine.
Gentle Folk is what happens when two marine biologists trade seaweed for Sauvignon and decide the ocean can wait. Gareth Belton holds a PhD in marine science from the University of Adelaide; his wife Rainbo was a fellow phycology doctoral candidate. They spent years cataloguing algae before a shared love of wine, food, and - in their words - growing things pulled them out of academia and into the Basket Range hills of the Adelaide Hills.
They started in 2012, amid the early generation of the Basket Range natural-wine community. First commercial release was three barrels, 2013. A year later Gareth was a finalist for Young Gun of Wine - the Australian natural-wine world's way of saying, keep an eye on this one. Eleven-odd years on, Gentle Folk farms around eight hectares across five sites and bottles around six to seven thousand cases a year (roughly seventy to eighty thousand bottles). Small, family, still run by people who can tell you the Latin name of a red alga.
The varieties are the Adelaide Hills classics - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling - but the winemaking is where the marine-biologist brain shows up. Low intervention, native-yeast ferments, minimal sulphur, unorthodox blends that cheerfully mix reds and whites in the same bottle. The cuvées read like chapter titles:
Each has its own gravity; none takes itself too seriously. Gentle Folk sits comfortably in the Australian natural-wine cohort alongside Jauma, Patrick Sullivan, and Lucy Margaux - the generation that quietly rewrote what Australian wine could taste like. There is a scientist's precision underneath the bottles, but what reaches you first is warmth, humour, and a sense that these people genuinely like what they are doing.
