E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2004

La Landonne from Côte Brune is crafted solely from Syrah, with the grapes sourced from vines aged over 35 years, thriving in limestone clay rich in iron oxide. The vinification involves the use of thermoregulated stainless steel tanks, continuous pumping over for even blending, and a minimum four-week maceration during alcoholic fermentation. This is followed by an extensive 42-month aging process in new oak barrels.

This wine is wonderfully developed and beautiful. The bouquet is rich with wet forest floor, dried flowers, leather, a hint of barnyard, Cuban tobacco, cough syrup, and fresh leather enveloped in an old leather rag. Impressively, despite its age, the wine is in great condition and retains a certain vitality. It's almost perfectly balanced. Admittedly, while this muscular, old-school style might not be my personal preference this evening, I can't help but appreciate its character and depth.

Wine #11 on Roasted Slopes event.
