Ca' del Bosco Annamaria Clementi 2015

Annamaria Clementi is a blend of 82% Chardonnay, 3% Pinot Blanc, and 15% Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay comes from 16 vineyards averaging 36 years of age, located in the municipalities of Erbusco, Adro, Corte Franca, Iseo, and Passirano. The Pinot Blanc is sourced from 2 vineyards, with an average age of 30 years, in Passirano. The Pinot Noir is derived from 7 vineyards, averaging 31 years of age, situated in Erbusco, Iseo, and Passirano.

The grapes are hand-harvested and placed in small crates to ensure pristine condition. After manual selection, the clusters undergo a proprietary "berry spa" treatment鈥攁 whirlpool-like washing process in three soaking tanks鈥攆ollowed by careful drying. The base wines are produced exclusively from free-run juice, ensuring exceptional purity and finesse.

Alcoholic fermentation occurs in small oak casks, where the wine matures on its lees for six months, during which malolactic fermentation also takes place. Gravity flow is employed to transfer the wine from barrels to the blending tank using specialised flying tanks, maintaining its integrity throughout. The wine then undergoes an extended period of lees ageing, lasting over 8 years, to develop its complex sensory profile.

Disgorgement is conducted in an oxygen-free environment to prevent oxidative stress and eliminate the need for additional sulphites, preserving the wine's purity and longevity.

On my second try in a week, this wine stepped up as a "wolf" among Champagne wines rather than merely a welcome drink. It even managed to puzzle some seasoned drinkers during a blind tasting. The nose offers notes of toast, fried nuts, damp cellar, white fruits, and honey. Generous, rich, and intense, it evolves nicely in the glass. The palate is long and almost full-bodied, further showcasing its impressive complexity.

This Franciacorta stands out as arguably the best I've tasted, rivaling some renowned Champagnes. It presents a serious, intense, and complex character, with an inviting nose of damp cellar, toast, white fruits, honey, and fried nuts. On the palate, it is exceptionally clean, round, and intense, offering a rich evolution of flavors. The finish is long, generous, and full-bodied, with lingering notes of toast and fried nuts. Truly an impressive and sophisticated sparkling wine.
