Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Blancs (d2019) NV

This wine secured the 🥈 2nd place in our wine tasting lineup.

Tasted blind, this wine initially presents an expressive bouquet, filled with intriguing aromas of tarragon, cream soda, bruised yellow apples, apple candy, and distinct Jerez notes. These aromas set high expectations, which are initially met upon first tasting. The palate begins broadly and richly, suggesting a depth of flavours. However, this richness doesn't sustain, as the wine soon reveals a thinner profile with a disappointingly short aftertaste. Despite this shortfall in the palate's development, the wine retains a certain appeal. It's friendly and shows signs of thoughtful craftsmanship, with a degree of complexity likely attributable to its later disgorgement.

Françoise Bedel Dis, "Vin Secret" (d2021) NV

This wine secured the 🥇 1st place in our wine tasting lineup.

Discovering a new label from a beloved winery can be an exciting experience, and it seems that the Secret Wine, courtesy of Elvira, didn't disappoint!

The wine greets you with an intense and beautiful bouquet, a delightful blend of baked apple and fried sunflower seeds, enriched with the sweetness of caramelized lemon. Earthy notes of chalk, lime (not fruit), a damp cellar, and mushrooms add to its complexity. On the palate, the wine demonstrates its intensity with good acidity and balance, along with a persistent finish. It's almost perfectly balanced, striking a harmonious chord between intensity and subtlety.

This particular bottle, while less intense than older ones from Bedel, showcases a gentle delicacy that doesn't sacrifice depth or complexity. It's a testament to the winery's ability to produce nuanced and layered wines.

Cà del Vént Memoria Brut Pas Operé VSQ 2014

This wine secured the 🥉 3rd place in our wine tasting lineup.

Opening a wine past its prime can indeed be bittersweet, yet it seems this experience still held some charm. The lack of fruit in the bouquet, while indicative of its age, is compensated by rich, earthy aromas of a damp cellar and mushrooms, with an intriguing note of pudding. The once-vibrant nose has mellowed to subtle whispers of dried pears.

On the palate, the wine retains good acidity, but this isn't enough to counterbalance the loss of structure and equilibrium over time. Despite these shortcomings, the wine retains a level of complexity and intrigue, offering a unique tasting experience that provides insight into its evolution. While it may not showcase the wine in its prime, there’s still a certain enjoyment in tasting its matured, more subdued character.
